What can we include in our wedding ceremony?

Whatever you wish! Popular elements of a wedding ceremony include readings, music, exchanging of rings, and of course those all-important personalised vows. I love to get to know the couples I work with and incorporate their own unique love story into the wording of the ceremony.

Cultural traditions, Family, Pets, anything!

But you don’t have to stop there – you can include anything you like in your wedding ceremony! You can include symbolic or cultural elements, put your own twist on traditions, include your pets, and involve your family and friends as much or as little as you wish.

You may have plenty of your own ideas or perhaps you’d like me to offer some inspiration. I have lots of experience incorporating a wide range of elements into ceremonies and I’d be happy to advise you on what works well.

The images below provide some examples of the unique enhancements I can incorporate into ceremonies if desired, such as Handfasting, Unity Candle Lighting, Sand blending, Oathing stone, the Sapatia and Quaich rituals.

Spiritualist Wedding Ceremony

A Spiritualist Wedding Ceremony will be conducted within a Sacred Circle according to the rituals of the elements, Air, Fire, Water and Earth, the latter includes a Handfasting ritual.

Each ritual will take place at a different compass point of the sacred circle. This can be done according to either the Avalon or Wiccan traditions. Your guests will be seated in a horseshoe shape so that they can see what’s happening clearly.

The Rituals of Air, Fire, Water and Earth

The Air Ritual is all about new beginnings. The ritual will be followed by the couple recalling and sharing the beginnings of their relationship, prepared in advance with guidance from their celebrant. A guest, known as an Elemental Reader, will be invited into the sacred circle to read something appropriate .

The Ritual of Fire invokes the flame of love and includes the couple lighting a perpetual candle from the celebrant’s candle lit from the flame of Avalon. The couple will share what love means to them and to talk about their love for each other. The elemental reader for fire will read something appropriate .

The Ritual of Water includes the blessing of water held in a specailly made cup which the couple drink from. At this point the couple make their vows, and exchange rings. The elemental reader for fire will read something appropriate .

The Ritual of Earth grounds the whole ceremony. It involves a handfasting which can be a traditional handfasting or you can use a hoop and wand. The Handfasting ritual represents the binding together of souls in friendship and enduring love

Additional Rituals following a Spiritualist Wedding Ceremony

A Spiritualist Wedding Ceremony is often followed by Besom Broom Jumping and Cake and Mead Ritual (Contact me for more details about this)

Where can we hold our wedding?

Working with a celebrant does mean you’ll need to complete the legalities of your wedding or civil partnership separately – but this leaves you free to hold a fully personalised ceremony anywhere you choose.

Do you have your hearts set on a particular venue? Perhaps an indoor venue like a hotel, castle or country house; or an outdoor location like a woodland, field or even your own garden. Choosing a celebrant to lead your ceremony means you don’t need to worry about whether your dream venue is licensed – I can conduct celebratory wedding ceremonies in any location you choose.

This will be unique but with less content than a full ceremony.

How it Works

  • If you’re considering working with me on your wedding ceremony, the first step is to contact me for a chat about your wishes and requirements.
  • If you decide to go ahead and book me then the next step is for us to meet in person so I can get to know you and find out exactly how you’d like your ceremony to unfold. I’ll listen to all your ideas and provide information about the wide variety of options to enhance your ceremony. We’ll work together to create a ceremony all about you, reflecting your story, values and beliefs.
  • I will then create your personalised ceremony based on your wishes. If possible we’ll also attend the venue together to work out where everyone will be on the day.
  • Throughout the planning process I’ll be available by telephone, email, Facetime, Zoom, etc.
  • On the big day I will lead your personalised ceremony with professionalism and joy – putting you at ease and making sure all your guests feel a real part of the occasion. You will then receive a commemorative copy of your unique ceremony script to keep and treasure.

Fees & Processes

Wedding, Civil Partnership and Commitment Ceremonies: £500

Shorter bespoke symbolic ceremonies: £300-£450

Fees will be payable in 3 staged payments unless your ceremony takes place within 6 months of booking then payment will be in 2 staged payments. If the ceremony takes place within 6 weeks of booking the full amount will be payable at time of booking. This reflects the work being carried out at each stage of the process.

(Additional mileage charges or public transport costs apply for ceremonies more than 30 miles radius from Wetherby, West Yorkshire. If overnight accommodation is required close to the ceremony venue this will charged at cost following discussion with you.)

Legal Marriage and Civil Partnership Requirements: If you choose a celebrant ceremony you will need to legally register your marriage or civil partnership. Many couples complete the legal formalities at a register office with just a couple of witnesses or very close family present then have their personalised ceremony with their family and friends at a place and time of their choosing. If you choose a short registrar-led ceremony at an approved venue a full or symbolic celebrant led ceremony can take place after this either at the venue or outdoors. If you have a church wedding with a person authorised to register a legal marriage present a symbolic celebrant-led ceremony can take place after this at venue of your choice or outdoors. From 2nd December 2019 opposite sex couples can now apply for a Civil Partnership and they will have all the legal and financial rights of married couple.
