Family & Naming Ceremonies

A memorable ceremony for your family

Family & Naming Ceremonies are beautiful occasions that can be held for babies, children, or even adults to offer them a warm and heartfelt welcome.

These special family ceremonies can take the form of Naming Ceremonies or Adoption Ceremonies to welcome children into their new family, and I can also create Naming Ceremonies for Adults who wish to mark an important milestone or transition.

All of these ceremonies can contain promises, music, readings and symbolic acts that will make the ceremony unique and meaningful, focusing on the beliefs and values you would like to share with your family and friends. Whatever your ideas and circumstances may be, I will help you to create a unique and memorable ceremony.

Welcoming Ceremony

Naming Ceremonies

It is traditional across the world to welcome a new child into their family and community. Various religions and cultures have different ways of doing this, but many people are now choosing to create their own ceremony to welcome a new family member.

A naming ceremony is a wonderful opportunity to make promises to your child or children about how you intend to nurture and support them as they grow up. You may also wish to ask people who will play an important role in your child’s life to make their own promises. Your wider family and friends can also play a part in welcoming them into your community.

Although most naming ceremonies take place when a child is very young – often between 3 and 18 months – a naming ceremony can be held for a child of any age. You could even combine the ceremony with a birthday celebration or parent’s wedding.

You can also include music, readings and poetry of your choice to make the ceremony meaningful, focusing on the beliefs and values you would like to share with your child. But you don’t have to stop there – you can include anything you like in your naming ceremony! I love to get to know the families I work with and incorporate their own unique story, ideas and wishes into the wording of the ceremony.

Absolutely amazing naming ceremony. Anne-Marie included all our family and close friends, including memories of special people. She made me cry, she made me laugh… most of all she made the day so special for the children.

Adoption Ceremonies

“When children come into our lives our world is new once more.” Anon

Just like Naming Ceremonies, Adoption Ceremonies offer a wonderful opportunity to formally welcome a new adopted member of your family. These can be held for children of any age.

Welcoming an adopted child into your family is a very special event and deserves to be marked with a tailor-made ceremony especially for them. It is a chance to make a commitment to them through your personalised promises.

If you also have other children then this can be an opportunity to show this precious person how special they are and for your family and community to show how welcome they are. They can be involved in planning the ceremony alongside you – a truly family affair.

An adoption ceremony can include all of the elements you would expect from a naming ceremony as above – I will work with you to create a truly personal an meaningful occasion for you and your adopted child.

Of all the things I’ll be wishing for, wherever you are and whatever I may do, there will never be a day in my life , when I won’t be wishing for the best… for you.

Family Commitment or Blending Ceremony

A blending ceremony symbolises that a family, once mixed, can’t be separated.

21st century families take many forms and if you would like to arrange a ceremony to celebrate the coming together of families for whatever reason then I can help you to create a tailored-made ceremony, as unique as your family.

I can help you to create a very special ceremony through music, readings, poetry and symbolic acts such as unity candles or sand blending.

Milestone or Life Transition Ceremonies

“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts.”
William Shakespeare

If you’d like to celebrate a special milestone or life transition in a more formal way than just having a party, I will be delighted to create a unique ceremony especially for you.

Whatever your circumstances you can choose a personalised ceremony that expresses the essence of your event and the thoughts and feelings associated with it. You can use music, readings and poetry read by you, your family and friends, or your celebrant, whatever you wish.

How it Works

  • If you’re considering working with me on your naming or family ceremony, the first step is to contact me for a chat about your wishes and requirements.
  • If you decide to go ahead and book me then the next step is for us to meet in person so I can get to know you and find out exactly how you’d like your ceremony to unfold. I’ll listen to all your ideas and provide information about the wide variety of options to enhance your ceremony. We’ll work together to create a ceremony all about you, reflecting your story, values and beliefs.
  • I will then create your personalised ceremony based on your wishes. If possible we’ll also attend the venue together to work out where everyone will be on the day.
  • Throughout the planning process I’ll be available by telephone, email, Facetime, Zoom, etc.
  • On the big day I will lead your personalised ceremony with professionalism and warmth – putting you at ease and making sure all your guests feel a real part of the occasion. You will then receive a commemorative copy of your unique ceremony script to keep and treasure.
